Why You Should Substitute White Foods for Whole Grain

With everyone being more nutritionally conscious nowadays, we decided to take a look at why more and more people are swapping white refined flour for wholegrain.

White Flour

Everything that we remember as a child from buttery toast to our birthday cakes and muffins have always been made with white flour. In fact as adults when we taste these tastes again it’s just like being kids again. (Unless we had particularly nutritionally enlightened parents!) It’s no wonder that we have an addiction almost to these white flour goods but did you know how damaging these foods are to our delicate systems?

The thing with white / all purpose / enriched flour is that our bodies process it like sugar. Enriched sounds lovely but in reality the flour actually gets completely stripped of all its goodness during this process. Yes white bread and related products taste amazing but the actual flour is created by stripping the most nutritious parts of the wheat berry. In fact this is the only starch left in white flour. Not good!

 White flour and digestion

White flour is just no good for your digestion. The starch is digested mega quickly thus causing a spike in insulin production. This then throws your whole body out of balance and can create a whole host of problems. In fact with the constant fluctuation of blood sugar which manifests through eating white flour products you could be potentially setting yourself up for diabetes and weight problems too!

Whole Grain

Whole grain and whole wheat flour is so much better for you than its white counterpart. This is due to the fact that whole wheat flour uses the whole wheat berry. This means that you are intaking all the goodness – the bran, the starch and the germ. When you eat the whole berry, there are no peaks and / or lows in insulin levels and your body stays healthy and balanced. Another great aspect of eating in this way is that you will stay full for longer than you would if you were eating white bread! No more rumbling tummies in the middle of the afternoon!

Whole grain is great for you if you have stomach and digestion difficulties and there are even studies to say that there is a link between whole grain and the prevention of cancer of the colon. When you buy your products always look for the word, “whole”. That way you know that you are getting the best; there are many brown products which don’t use the entire wheat berry and won’t be as good for you as “whole” products.

It might be hard in the first few months to wean your family, especially the youngsters off white bread and white flour products but over time it can be done. A trick is to make a half and half sandwich, half white bread and half whole grain, this will give your kids time to get used to the different taste and texture. It’s worth making the change for the health of both you and your family.

Eating whole grain foods instead of white foods is a great way to ensure your general nutrition levels remain healthy consistently.

Tofu Tips for Weight Loss

Not many people know that tofu can help them to lose weight. While it may not look or seem appealing, tofu can be a great addition to your diet when used as a replacement for foods that are higher in calories. Silken-tofu, found in vacuum packs, is delicious when mixed in with creamy sauces and is also a terrific substitute for cheese. If you are looking to replace the meats in your diet, consider purchasing water-packed tofu instead. Experiment with the different types of tofu to find one that is right for your meal plans.

Why Does Tofu Work for Weight Loss?

Because tofu has high amounts of vegetable protein and is made with soy, it allows your body to feel full earlier in the meal. Tofu can aid your digestive system by helping your body to excrete any water weight that you may have had leftover.

For example, a 100 gram piece of grilled chicken breast contains 17 milligrams of calcium and 35 grams of protein. The same serving of water-packed tofu contains 204 milligrams of calcium and 10 grams of protein while a 100 gram serving of silken-tofu has 200 milligrams of calcium and 8 grams of protein. Because tofu has such high amounts of calcium, it is easy to see why tofu is a great replacement to your traditional meats and cheeses.

When comparing the calories in 100 gram portions of silken-tofu and water-packed tofu, the former contains 85 calories and the latter has 97 calories. On the other hand, a piece of chicken the same size has 187 calories.

How to Cook Tofu

Tofu may seem bland and boring to some people, but there are actually many ways you can cook it to add variety to your diet. For example, you can use silken-tofu to make a high-protein smoothie by blending it with fruits, yogurts and juices or you can make an entire dinner by stir-frying water-packed tofu with your favorite vegetables and sauces. If it is grilling season, consider making tofu kebabs with tomatoes, onions and peppers. Make sure you marinate the tofu for added flavor. You can also make a veggie burger out of tofu, vegetables, breadcrumbs and seasonings or substitute water-packed tofu in lasagnas or stews.

Tips to Remember

While tofu is high in calcium and protein, it is also relatively high in fat. It is this high fat content that helps the body feel full sooner, so you end up eating less at any given meal. There is actually more fat in water-packed tofu than there is in a 100 gram piece of chicken breast so if you are serious about losing weight, avoid combining tofu with other high-calorie foods. Also monitor your portion sizes and limit your tofu intake to two to three times per week to ensure that you are not consuming too much of it.

The best way to lose weight with tofu is to introduce it into your diet while maintaining a healthy exercise routine. Do not assume that because you are eating tofu, you are going to magically lose weight. Stick with intense cardiovascular workouts to burn excess stomach fat, or consider enrolling in a Zumba or Pilate’s class, and replace your meats and cheeses with tofu for the most beneficial weight loss plan.

LowFatDietPlan.org believes that tofu is a great diet food because it fits into so many diet plans, such as how-fat, low-cab and vegetarian.

Going for Healthier Pasta and Soup Dishes

Health is wealth as they say. Money is useless if you just consume all of it in hospitals or in medicine. So how exactly do we become healthy? We start with what we eat.

Eating is very important. Our life will be a bit difficult when we are often hungry. It is not the only essential thing in surviving this planet but we need it. Also, it has to be paired with water or any other drink. Going back to the first paragraph, what should we take in and eat? Suggested healthier options would be fruits and vegetables.

With all food recipes and dishes available right now, let me make two suggestions on what to eat or cook. These are popular dishes with a healthier twist.

Healthy lasagna

Lasagna is pasta that is usually prepared by altering layers of cheese, vegetables and meat sauce cooked in an oven. There are no specific recipes that will be cited here but the twist is that there will be no meat in it. Yes, that it true. This is what we shall call vegetarian lasagna. Meat will be replaced with substitutes or meat analogues. No beef, chicken or pork in it. It is delicious and budget-friendly as well since vegetables are way cheaper than meat counterparts.

Soup for the soul

A meal is really more enjoyable when we have a soup to go with it. Any vegetable soup recipe will be a healthier choice compared to ones that are in can or ones that come with meat in them. Why? It is cheaper if we use vegetables. Another wonderful fact is that vegetable soup or vegetable in general gives us the vitamins and minerals that we need to ward us from diseases. Being healthy makes us feel good about ourselves. It makes us love and value ourselves more.

Avoiding Basic Foods High in Cholesterol

It can be surprising for some people to hear that they have high cholesterol levels, but all you have to do is look at your own diet to assess the situation. If you take the time to carefully inventory what you eat on a regular basis, it shouldn’t be too hard to locate your problem areas. For most people, this usually involves unhealthy choices at snack time or eating too much during dinner. There isn’t really any secret as to which types of foods are bad for you either, and it’s likely you already have a general idea of what you should be avoiding. The trick is to match theory with practice since it can be hard to stay healthy all the time in real life. People are dealing with longer work schedules, increased tributes to and from work, and more responsibilities around the home. Sometimes it may seem like there is no other option other than ordering a pizza or driving through a fast foods window. But make no mistake, when it comes to your health impossible complications with cholesterol it’s absolutely essential to interject a healthy eating whenever you can.

The first step is to identify the foods high in cholesterol that have gotten you into trouble in the first place. It’s important to stay away from saturated fats and these are most commonly found in things like potato chips or processed animal products. The good news about saturated fats is that you can safely remove them from your diet without impacting your overall nutrition. The bad news is they are most commonly found in things that we love to eat and that we find the most delicious. No one says you have to get rid of them altogether, but you should work on finding healthier alternatives so that you can have moderation in mind. For example, instead of reaching for that bag of potato chips you might want to try some fresh fruits or vegetables. Or if you want something with similar texture but without all of the saturated fats, try mixed nuts or even a bowl of whole-grain cereal.

If you really want to get back on track then you have to take your diet back into your own hands. That means you’re going to have to start cooking. For some people this will be a problem, but if you aren’t all that familiar with your kitchen it’s important to realize what an advantage home cooking can be. You can have full control over each and every ingredient that eventually ends up in your system, and you really can’t trust restaurants without responsibility. When you cook for yourself and keep an eye on your overall nutrition by making sure to get plenty of protein, foods high in iron, and all of the other goodies they keep your body healthy. It’s also a great way to try out your new healthy recipes, and you might just find a popular new favorite in the process.
